It’s Not Just About Cracks: 4 Other Reasons to Replace Your Car Windshield

If the windshield on your car isn't cracked or chipped, you might not think that you need a replacement. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily the case. Your windshield might not be safe, even if there are no signs of visible damage. This is especially true if you own an older model car, and the windshield is original equipment. Take a look at the list provided below. If you've noticed any of those issues on your windshield, it's time for a windshield replacement.

The Glass Is Ill-Fitting

If you have an older model car, and the windshield no longer fits as well as it should, you need to have it replaced. It's not uncommon for the gasket to weaken. When that happens, gaps can develop around the windshield, resulting in fit problems. Unfortunately, if the windshield doesn't fit properly, it can fall out. Not only that, but water can get into your car through the gaps in the gasket. Luckily, you can avoid those problems altogether by replacing your old windshield. When you invest in a new windshield, a new gasket is included with the installation.

The Glass Isn't Clear

If your windshield is so old that the glass is no longer clear, it's time for a replacement. It's not uncommon for windshields to become dull, yellow, or cloudy as they age. But, if your windshield isn't clear, you can't see things around you as well as you should. In fact, dull, yellow, or cloudy windshields can increase your risk for accidents, including those involving pedestrians. The best way to protect yourself, and those around you, is to have your discolored windshield replaced as quickly as possible.

The Glass Isn't Safe

If your windshield is outdated, there's a good chance that it's made from tempered glass, rather than laminated glass. You might not think that there's much of a difference, but there actually is, especially where safety is concerned. Tempered glass is great for side and rear car windows. That's because the tempered glass will break into smaller pieces when it shatters. For the car windshield, you want laminated glass. With laminated glass, the windshield will crack when something comes in contact with it, but it won't shatter. If you have a tempered glass windshield on your car, it's time to invest in a replacement.

The Glass Is Pitted

Finally, if your windshield is covered with a layer of small pits, don't wait too long for the replacement. Pits can develop over time, and usually from exposure to sand storms or hail. Pitting reduces the strength of your windshield. It also reduces your visibility, which is why you need to have your windshield replaced if you can see pits in the glass.
